UNION SOLDIER'S LETTER REGARDING PETERSBURG
Fine content soldier's letter from Pvt. Albert C. Brown, Co. K, 20th Maine Infantry, 3pp. 8vo., ‘Near Petersburge [sic] Va', June 20, 1864, sending detailed news to his aunt. In part: ‘…We crossed the James River the sixteenth and marched to this place the same day and night. Here we found the Second Corps together with Burnsides Corps (ninth) trying to shell out the rebs who are strongly intrenched in and about the town. Since then we have advanced a short distance taken two or three lines of breastworks and some prisoners. Night before last our Brigade moved in the cover of the darkness on a hill right in the face and eyes of the enemies artillery and rifle pits and we have been obliged to keep pretty close since then. I can assure you we have put up a strong line of earthworks in front of us so that we are safe as long as we keep low. Quite a number have been wounded and one or two killed since we came here but they exposed themselves needlessly. The enemy are not able to use their artillery much for ours have a fair rake at them and it is so much more effectual that we can silence them pretty quiet…'. With original transmittal cover, very good condition.
