UNION SOLDIER'S LETTER FROM BATTLE OF COLD HARBOR
Interesting A.L.S. of Private William Merrills, Company H, 44th N.Y. Vols. Infantry, 3pp. 8vo., June 1, 1864. On the second day of the historic Battle of Cold Harbor, Merrills writes in pencil on the field to his parents, in part: ‘…Once more I am permitted to write a few words to you…We have been marching & fighting every day & a bigger part of the nights. I have escaped unharmed so far & stood the marching extremely well…We are pressing our way slowly onwards to Richmond…The day before yesterday we were under a quite brisk fire & lay under it all of the after noon Capt. Edwin A. Nash received a severe wound but not dangerous he was wounded in the rite hip I would of rather seen enny other officer in the regt wounded for he was the onely one left that was fit to command the regt Our col & major wer both wounded before I got to the regt Gen Grant rode along the lines this morning but I did not have the pleasure of meeting him. Yesterday there was heavy fighting on our rite. We have plenty of rations yet Such as they are something of a contrast from Albany fare…I expressed $60 to father I have not herd from it I shall have to close for the skimishes on our front or stiring up a mess…'. Fine condition.
