UNION SOLDIER'S LETTER AFTER BATTLE OF ROWLESBURG
Fine content letter of Pvt. George Wantz, Co. A, 7th Maryland Infantry, 3pp. 8vo., Rowlesburg, May 11, 1864, on bright red and blue Union patriotic letterhead to his sister. In part: ‘…I am…still encamped on the heights surrounding Rowlesburg. I have written two letters but I suppose you have directed them to Harpers Ferry and that is the reason they have not been received. After this…we expect to lay low some time, we where called out the other morning for we heard the Rebels were coming but they did not come so we went back to camp, I have given you a small sketch of our march but you cannot form any idea of it till you accomplished it yourself…There is a great many troops passing on the railroad to join our forces above us, we are expecting a fight but I don't think think we will get into it…if it falls to our lot…you need not be afraid we will conduct ourselves well. They say they are at Clarksburg in force and are entrenching themselves but I think they will be driven out of that place for there must be about twenty thousand men there ours. Our company is on picket…and I am stationed there…Rowlesburg is a…dry place we cannot even buy piss [?] The sixth Virginia is here with us the same regiment that drove them out…there is no young ladies here but soldier's wives, so they say, they all belong to…the six Va…'.
