Description:

UNION SAILOR DISCUSSES HIS "CATAMARAN"
Good content Union sailor's letter, 7pp. 8vo., "On the Old Ship Off Mobile Bay[USS Hartford]", June 9, 1864 in which Robin writres to his wife. In part: "...went on board the Hartford to see the Admiral, he is delighted with my machines, one of which I brought with me...I have become acquainted with several more Captains...they have carefully examined my catamaran as I call it...I shall think so when one of them has blown up the 'Tennessee'...if no attack is made here...I shall send in my resignation...I don't think any demonstration will be made upon Mobile for some weeks to come...We may make some attemp to destroy the Ram Tenn...They are clearing the Navy now of worthless 2nd and 3rd...the traitor Buchanan...threatens to come out and open the Blockade...". Very good. Catamaran-type hulls were in use as early as 1861 as a means of sectioning-off a hull to create watertight compartments.
