Description:

Green hardcover copy of 'The Soldier's Story of His Captivity at Andersonville, Belle Isles, and other Rebel Prisons' by Warren Lee Goss (Boston: I.N. Richardson and Co.), 1871. Approx. 350pp. 4to.The book contains a Union soldier's experiences as a prisoner of war. Some sections include: 'Enlistment in the Corps.', 'Sickness and Insensibility at Belle Island', 'Prison life in Andersonville', 'Prison vocabulary', 'Negro prisoners', 'Great suffering', etc. The book also features illustrations done by Thomas Nast (1840-1902) American illustrator often considered 'Father of the American Cartoon.' Most interestingly an inscription on the front flyleaf shows the book to be the personal copy of Henry M. Kiefer (1847-1930), Civil War veteran who served at Chancellorsville, Hatchers Run, and Gettysburg. It reads in full: 'One can forgive and forget all the wickedness of the South when it attempted to destroy the best nation on earth - Except to mask[?] barbarians and ungodly[?] cruelty to our men of the North prisoners at Libby and Andersonville. Read this book and you will understand how and why a northern soldier never can forgive this unutterable cruelty! Even after fifty years have passed. Oct. 28, 1914' The front cover is ripped at the gutter, slightly worn, still quite good condition.
