Description:

UNION OFFICER'S LETTER
A.L.S. of Capt. Jacob S. Winans, commanding Co. H of the 9th Pennsylvania Reserve, which later became the 38 Pennsylvania Infantry, 4pp. legal folio, "Camp Pierpont" Oct. 22, [1861] to his father, in part: "...All the Pa Resv Corps was marched out the Leesburg road about five miles from here last Friday. We bivouaced near Drainsville until yesterday when we returned to camp. It is understood that the movement was for the purpose of attracting the attention of Johnson as to give Gen'l banks an opportunity to cross the Potomac, how far we were successful I cannot tell, although I heard that Gen Baker was killed while heading a charge on the rebels. Can't say how true it is tho... As we went out the other day we stop[p]ed to rest near the house where the mother of Jackson the murderer of Ellsworth lives, the house was without any white inhabitants. Mrs J-- being a prisoner at Washington, the only occupations were a young negro boy and two negro children. I went through the house, saw Mrs. Jackson's picture taken when a young woman, drummed upon her piano a little while for the amusement of the soldiers the house was well furnished, but the farm was in bad repair...We did not see any rebels, they having moved back as we advanced...I see that the ladies of N.B. have formed a relief committee for the benefit of wounded soldiers...We will drive the enemy out of Manassas even tho we have to do it as Napoleon passed the bridge of Lodi...". Light soiling, usual folds, else very good condition.
