Description:

Fine Union-published newspaper, 15pp. folio, the Oct. 3, 1963 edition of the "Army and Navy Journal" containing numerous interesting reports on a number of notable Civil War events. Chief among these is a detailed account of the events of the Battle of Chickamauga, the first major battle of the war fought in Georgia which involved the second-highest number of casualties after the Battle of Gettysburg. While the conflict was the most significant Union defeat in the Western Theater, the publication seems to dismiss the loss, in part: "the stake at issue was not the petty battlefield...but the possession of a whole state-an entire theatre of war...rebel chiefs saw clearly that unless the Union army could be dislodged...the fate of the Confederacy was sealed...thanks to the cool courage of the commander...they were foiled...". The page continues to give a detailed summary of the Union's movements throughout the two-day battle, beneath two printed aerial maps showing the location of each unit. The publication also notably contains a speech from Brigadier General Q.A. Gillmore, commending the Union army for destroying Fort Sumter, in part: "The scene where our country's flag suffered its first dishonor, you have made the theatre of one of its proudest triumphs...It has been strengthened by every appliance known to military sciencebut it has yielded to your courage and patient labor. Its walls are now crumbled to ruins, its formidable batteries are silenced, and though a hostile flag still floats over it, the fort is a harmless and helpless wreck...the city and harbor of Charleston lie at the mercy of your artillery, from the very spot where the first shot was fired at your country's flag..." Much more war-date content. Tiny spots of foxing throughout, slightly ragged edges, else very good.
