Description:

(UNION NAVY) USS LACKAWANNA SEAMAN IS ENTITLED TO PRIZE MONEY FOR CAPTURED BLOCKADE RUNNERS
Very interesting manuscript D.S., 1p. oblong 8vo., [n.p., n.d., ca. June, 1863], a statement from James Fulton, paymaster of the steam sloop USS LACKAWANNA, confirming that one of the sloop's crew is entitled to a share of prize money received for the sale of ships captured while attempting to run the Union blockade at Mobile. In full: ‘I hereby certify that John Anderson was attached to, and onboard of the U. S. Steam Sloop Lackawanna, as Seaman, at the time of the capture of the following vessels[:] Schooner Sea Lion Captured May 9, 1863. Schooner Hunter [captured May] 18, 1863. British Steamer Neptune Captured June 14, 1863. Confederate Steamer Planter [captured June] 15, 1863. And is entitled to share in the Prize Money accruing from the capture of said vessels.' The paymaster signs at the conclusion, and the Lackawanna's captain throughout the Civil War, JOHN BONNETT MARCHAND (1808-1875), countersigns approving the statement. Shows a 1.5 in. tear at the bottom edge, barely touching Marchand's signature, with expected folds and a few chips to the edges, otherwise in very good overall condition. Just over one year later, on August 5, 1864, the Lackawanna, still under Marchand, would participate in the Battle of Mobile Bay as part of Admiral David Farragut's Squadron. During the engagement, the Lackawanna rammed the Confederate ironclad CSS TENNESSEE, and collided with Farragut's flagship, the USS HARTFORD, while attempting another attack. Twelve of her sailors would receive the Medal of Honor for their actions during the battle.
