Description:

(UNION NAVY) USS HARTFORD PAYMASTER'S NAVAL SERVICE RECORD
A very interesting partly-printed document, 2pp. legal folio, Brooklyn, Dec. 20, 1865, a State of New York ‘Individual Record of Officers, Seamen and Marines', completed by U.S. Navy Acting Assistant Paymaster James Woodville Sands. The form offers spaces for the respondent to fill in their name, rank, commission date, and other information related to their service. Woodville lists the ships on which he was a crew member and the dates he transferred: ‘U S Brig ‘Sea Foam' Dec 21, 1861', ‘[Admiral David Farragut's] U S Flagship ‘Hartford' January 26, 1863', and ‘U S Str. ‘Valley City' January 9 1864'. Most interestingly, Sands goes on to list the engagements in which he participated in during the recently-completed Civil War: ‘Was in the fight with forts Jackson & St. Phillip, at the capture of New Orleans, at Vicksburg, Grand Gulf, Warrenton, Port Hudson, Plymouth NC. Expedition up the Roanoke river in which the ‘Valley City' took the lead & picked up some 50 torpedoes, barely escaped being blown up at the time the ‘Otsego' was sunk. Was in expeditions up the Chowan, Blackwater & Scuppernong rivers. Have taken part in Eleven engagements'. The verso of the form lists Sands' family history and other biographical information. The form shows expected folds, with small splits at the edge repaired with archival tape, in very good to fine overall condition.
