Description:

UNION NAVY SCRIMSHAW TOOTH
Rare scrimshaw whale's tooth with a Union navy theme, 5" long overall. One side shows a large oval portrait of Union Admiral THEODORUS BAILEY (1805-1877), who commanded blockading squadrons in the Gulf and the Mississippi Delta. He later was stationed in Portsmouth, a major whaling port. Bailey's portrait bears a Confederate flag at left, and an American flag at right. The reverse bears an image of the USS CAYUGA in action, probably off Forts Jackson and St. Philip below New Orleans, a battle which led to the fall of the city. This tooth may have been carved by a CAYUGA crewman. Very good.
