Description:

(UNION NAVY) MEDAL OF HONOR RECIPIENT HUGH MALLOY
(1841-1922) U.S. Navy sailor who received the Medal of Honor for his actions aboard the river gunboat USS FORT HINDMAN while engaging a Confederate battery near Harrisonburg, Louisiana on March 2, 1864. After a shellburst killed the sponger of the fore gun, Molloy jumped out of the forward gun port, retrieved the sponge, and loaded the gun from his exposed position while under heavy rifle fire. Scarce A.L.S., 1p. 4to., Chicago, Jan. 22, 1909, to an unnamed ‘Friend and Comrade', most likely a former shipmate. He writes, in part: ‘...In the first place I wanted to have you for our Comander, Whatever honor there is you were justly entitle to it… Our Comrades that are sick should help to have the bill past and if they did not want the money they would not have to tale it, and the men that are not so well off would be greatly benefitted by the passage of the bill… I am not rich I work hard every day for small wages, still I don't think I will ever have to go to the Soldiers house. I am willing to put up my share to help the good work along. I would like to know if I can get a new medal [of Honor?] my old one lookes so much like a G[rand] A[rmy of the Republic] badge. I could have it engraved here. [all sic]' He signs at the conclusion in black ink. The ink is somewhat light throughout the letter, which shows original mailing folds, otherwise in very good to fine condition.
