Good lot of four items signed by U.S. Navy commanders who gave notable service during the Civil War, includes: ENOCH G. PARROTT (1814-1879) Captor of the Confederate privateer SAVANNAH as commander of the brig USS PERRY, later commander of the monitors CANONICUS and MONDANOCK, partly-printed D.S. "E.G. Parrott", 1p. oblong 8vo., Portsmouth, Jan. 28, 1876, a check drawn from the First National Bank of Portsmouth, paying $150 to a "S&P". Parrott signs at bottom right in black ink. Shows three punch cancellations and a 1" tear at the bottom edge, none affecting the signature, else very good. WITH: FREDERICK ENGLE (1799-1868) Commander of the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard. Partly-printed D.S. "F. Engle", 1p. oblong 8vo., New York Navy Yard, Aug. 1, 1851, a pay receipt acknowledging that he has received $178.15 from a purser. Engle signs in black ink at lower right. Mounted to a card backing along with a printed biographical extract, else very good. WITH: FRANCIS H. GREGORY (1789-1866) Career U.S. Navy rear admiral who served from the War of 1812 through the Civil War, during the latter of which he oversaw the construction of numerous vessels in private shipyards. A.N.S. on the bottom third of a page, apparently trimmed from a pay receipt, in full: "Furnished by Order of the Chief Bureau Navigation - Certified and Approved - W.H. Gregory R. Adl. Supr." Shows additional ink inscriptions as part of the original document, with folds and a ragged top edge where the rest of the sheet has been lost, else very good. WITH: THOMAS CRABBE (1787-1872) U.S. Navy Admiral, commander of the West Africa Squadron 1855-1857. Signature in black ink cut from a letter, adding his rank "Captain". Mounted to a card backing, very good. Four pieces.
