Good lot of three items signed by notable U.S. Navy commanders of the Civil War. Includes: JOHN RODGERS (1812-1882) Commander of the James River Flotilla and later captor of the Confederate ram ATLANTA as commander of the monitor USS WEEHAWKEN. A.L.S., 1p. folio., aboard USS VANDERBILT at San Francisco, June 27, 1866, to Lt. Commander F.M. Bunce, commander of the monitor USS MONADNOCK, in part: '...You will proceed with your vessel to Mare Island... to have the Monadnock put out of commission and laid up at the Navy Yard.' He signs at the conclusion in black ink, adding rank 'Commodore'. Original mailing folds with minor splits thereto and minor toning to the edges, else very good. WITH: THOMAS H. STEVENS, JR. (1819-1896) Briefly commander of the USS MONITOR, went on to command the monitors USS PATAPSCO and USS WINNEBAGO, the latter of which gave valiant service at the Battle of Mobile Bay. A.L.S. 'T. H. Stevens', 3pp. 8vo., Erie, Feb. 19, 1838, informing his unnamed correspondent of his transfer to the steam frigate USS COLORADO and the necessity of selling his possessions. He also asks for a $3,000 loan, against which he offers family property as collateral. Slight toning to the edges, else very good. WITH: JAMES W. NICHOLSON (1821-1887) Commander of several gunboats and the monitor USS MANHATTAN under Percival Drayton at Charleston. Manuscript L.S. 'J.W. Nichols', 1p. folio, New York Navy Yard, June 11, 1869, to Commander J.G. Walker of the USS SABINE, directing him to take receipt of 150 Coston maritime flares. Boldly signed at conclusion in black ink, with rank in another hand and countersignature of another officer. Shows original mailing folds, with slight toning to the edges, else very good. Three pieces.
