Description:

Good lot of three items signed by notable U.S. Navy commanders of the Civil War. Includes: RICHARD W. MEADE (1837-1897) Rear Admiral who commanded the Mississippi River ironclad LOUISVILLE and the blockading gunboats MARBLEHEAD and CHOCURA during the Civil War, also helped quell the New York Draft Riots of 1863. Remembered as one of the most progressive and reform-minded officers of the post-war Navy. Good content and association A.L.S. 'R.W. Meade', 4pp. 8vo., aboard USS DOLPHIN at Norfolk, April 8, 1886, to Lt. W.H. Jacques, in small part: 'I thank you very much for sending me your little 'brochure' on Torpedoes... All these things go far to convince... our people that while the Navy may lack material its personnel is as good now as in its best days and only needs the chance to convince the world of its capacity...' He signs at the conclusion in black ink. Shows original folds and toning to the edges, else very good. Jacques was a notable naval innovator in his own right, serving as Assistant Inspector of Ordnance and Secretary to the U.S. Senate Committee on Ordnance, and later as president of the Holland Torpedo Boat Company, where he did much to perfect the Navy's first submarine designs. WITH: JAMES R.M. MULLANEY (1818-1887) Rear Admiral who, as commander of the screw sloop ONEIDA, lost his arm due to wounds suffered in combat with the Confederate ram TENNESSEE at Mobile Bay. Manuscript L.S., 1p. 4to., aboard USS RICHMOND at Lisbon, Sep. 4, 1869, to John G. Walker, commander of USS SABINE, requesting a detail of ten midshipmen from that ship report to him for duty aboard the Richmond. He signs at the conclusion in black ink. Shows original folds with one slight split thereto, and slight toning to the edges, else very good. WITH: JOHN B. MONTGOMERY (1794-1872) Career Navy officer whose pre-war service included putting down the Bear Flag revolt in California and blockading Mazatlan, commanded the Pacific Squadron at the outset of the Civil War. A.L.S., 1p. 8vo., Washington, D.C., March 5, 1870, to Charles M. Pond, esq., informing his correspondent of his change in address and requesting that he be forwarded some shares of stock. He signs at the conclusion in black ink, adding his rank 'Rear Admiral U.S.N.' Shows original folds, ragged at the left edge, else very good. Three pieces.
