Good lot of four items signed by notable U.S. Army generals of the Civil War, includes: CASSIUS M. CLAY (1810 - 1903) Union major general who refused to serve because emancipation had not been declared at the beginning of the war. He served as minister to Russia from Lincoln's until Grant's administration. Signature in black ink on a 4 1/2" x 2 1/2" card, adding " Truly" and the date "1877", with a blind-embossed seal at top right. Shows slight toning to the edges and small pencil marks to the verso, else very good. WITH: WILLIAM F. SMITH (1824-1903) Union major general who led at First Bull Run, Antietam, Fredericksburg, and was instrumental in the "Cracker Line" operations at Chattanooga. Manuscript E.S. on a 3 1/4" x 2" slip of paper cut from a war-date document, June 10, 1864, in black ink. Very good. WITH: JOSEPH HOLT (1807 - 1894) Union Judge Advocate General empowered to suspend the writ of habeas corpus, tried Fitz-John Porter and the Lincoln assassins. Signature "J. Holt" in black ink on a 4 3/4" x 1 1/2" slip of paper cut from an album page, adding "Judge Advocate General". Shows slight toning and a small chip to the edge, else very good. WITH: ROBERT B. POTTER (1829-1887) Union brigadier general, severely wounded at New Bern; also active at Spotsylvania and the siege of Petersburg. War-date manuscript E.S. on a 3" x 2 3/4" slip of paper cut from a document, Cold Harbor, June 12, [1864], in black ink. Very good. Four pieces.

Shipments are sent via USPS Priority, USPS International Priority, FedEx and DHL (for most overseas shipments) or FedEx Ground at the auctioneer's option, signature is always required, unless other arrangements are made. Handling and shipping charges will be added to the invoice in one entry. Buyers should be aware that large, framed, fragile or odd shaped items can incur substantial shipping and packing charges. International shipments are invoiced by DIMENSIONAL weight, not the item weight. Please contact us for an estimate before bidding NOTE: Large, heavy or bulky items may not be shipped by the auctioneer - arrangements for shipping of these items via a third-party shipper may be arranged through the auction house. Customers who supply their own courier account number will still be charged a handling fee.
