Good lot of four items signed by notable U.S. Army generals of the Civil War, includes: NATHANIEL P. BANKS (1816 - 1894) Union major general who defeated "Stonewall" Jackson in the battle of Kernstown. After the war, he served as a congressman. Franking signature "N.P. Banks" in blue ink on a 5" x 2 3/4" envelope panel addressed to General Francis A. Walker of the Census Bureau, all in his hand. He also adds the note "No answer will call [today]" and his initials "N.P.B." at bottom left. The ink shows brushing overall, slightly ragged at the edges, else very good. WITH: CUVIER GROVER (1828-1885) U.S. Army brigadier general, commanded a division in the XIX Corps during the capture of Baton Rouge and the Siege of Port Hudson. He also participated in the Third Battle of Winchester, Fisher's Hill, and Cedar Creek, where he was wounded and brevetted to the rank of major general of volunteers. A.N.S. 'C. Grover", 1p. 8vo., Omaha, Nov. 18, 1875, to an unnamed captain, wishing him success. He signs at the conclusion in black ink. Shows folds and slight toning, else very good. WITH: TRUMAN SEYMOUR (1824-1891) U.S. Army major general present at Ft. Sumter, Second Bull Run, Petersburg and Appomattox. War-date A.E.S. on a 3" x 7 3/4" slip of paper cut from a document, [n.p.], March 20, 1865, refusing to permit the use of transportation, citing a General Order which reads to the contrary. He signs at the conclusion in black ink, adding his rank "Brig Genl Comg". Slightly ragged at the edges, shows slight soiling, else very good. WITH: DAVID BERKLEY MCCREARY (1826-1906) Brevet brigadier general, commander of the 145th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry Regiment. Partly-printed D.S., 1p. oblong 12mo., Erie, May 10, 1888, a check for ten dollars drawn on the Marine National Bank, paid to W.W. Ross. McCreary signs at the conclusion in black ink. Shows folds and three punch cancellations at bottom right, else very good. Four pieces.
