Description:

UNION GENERALS LYSANDER CUTLER AND JOHN NEWTON
Good association pair of signed endorsements on a war-date letter, 1p. 4to., Camp Schuyler, NY, Sep. 22, 1863, from a Pvt. William Foskett of the 14th Regiment of the New York State Militia, to Capt. L. B. Norton, Chief Signal Officer of the Army of the Potomac, requesting to be presented before the board of examination for entry into the Signal Corps. The letter is endorsed as forwarded and the request disapproved by the lieutenant colonel and colonel commanding the brigade, beneath which appears the endorsement of LYSANDER CUTLER (1807–1866), a Union brigadier general who commanded the Iron Brigade at Fredericksburg, was heavily engaged on the first day at Gettysburg, and was severely wounded in the face at Globe Tavern. He signs ‘L Cutler' in black ink, with another hand adding his rank. The request is next forwarded and disapproved by JOHN NEWTON (1823–1895), the Union major general who took over Reynold's command at Gettysburg, and fought at Antietam and Chancellorsville as well. He signs his endorsement in black ink, with another hand executing his rank. The request bears four further endorsements by officers at the corps, division and brigade level, returning it Foskett's regiment. Shows expected folds, otherwise in very good to fine condition overall.
