Description:

UNION GENERALS ERASMUS D. KEYES AND JOHN J. PECK
Good association pair of A.E.S's on an interesting war-date letter, 1p. 8vo., ‘Camp Near Harrison's Landing', July 15, 1862, from a J. G. McCandless to a captain, tendering his resignation as assistant surgeon of the 32nd Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteers, on account of his failing health. The resignation is endorsed on the verso by 4th Corps commander ERASMUS D. KEYES (1801–1895), a Union major general who commanded a brigade at Bull Run, and led a corps in diversionary moves during Gettysburg. He writes ‘Accept July 21. ‘62' and signs ‘E D Keyes in black ink', with another hand adding his rank. The resignation is further endorsed as approved by a colonel of the regiment and two other medical personnel at the division and corps levels, with a final A.E.S. added by division commander JOHN J. PECK (1821-1878), a Union major general who fought in the defense of Washington, at Fair Oaks, and Suffolk, who writes ‘I concur with Brig Surgeon decision' and signs in black ink, adding his rank ‘Brig Genl Comdg Division'. Shows original mailing folds, faintly toned, otherwise in fine condition.
