Description:

Great war-date endorsed D.S., 1p. 8vo., 'Headquarters 98th N.Y.V.', Yorktown, Sep. 17, 1862, the case of an chaplain gone A.W.O.L. while en route to a hospital! The recto of the document is penned and signed by Col. CHARLES DURKEE of the 98th New York Vols. who writes: '...I have to report that Chaplain Hubbard was sent to Hospital...about 5th Sept...on going to the Hospital Sept. 14th he was found to be absent - no one in charge knew when, where of by whose authority...' The verso bears endorsements by three Union generals. On Sep. 18, Brigadier Gen. JOHN H. EMORY pens a lengthy A.E.S. stating that Hubbard had been called upon by him on the 15th to 'show his credentials' and it was then that Emory learned of Hubbard's flight. He submits a statement by an officer who had failed to report the absence (not included), and Emory forwards the document. On Sep. 19, Major Gen. ERASMUS D. KEYES orders that the date of Hubbard's leaving the regiment must be determined, and noted on the muster rolls, after which he is not to be paid. Finally, Major JOHN J. PECK forwards the document to the headquarters of the Corps Commander. Typical folds and soiling else very good. While Hubbard's ultimate fate is unknown, we do know that the regiment was engaged at Seven Pines and took heavy losses, probably inspiring Hubbard to 'fly the coop'.
