UNION GENERALS CHARLES CRUFT, ALVAN GILLEM, GEORGE STONEMAN AND FREDERICK LISTER
Fine association group of signed endorsements on the verso of a letter, 1p. 4to., Greenville, TN, June 22, 1865, from a William M. Kocull, surgeon of the 40th U. S. Colored Infantry, to fellow surgeon George E. Cooper, requesting that 2nd Lt. Isaac J. Wells be detached from the 123rd U. S. Colored Infantry to serve as acting assistant servant with the his regiment. In part: ‘...The Regiment is without an Asst. Surgeon or Hospital Steward and the great amount of sickness incident to new troops renders it impossible for one Med. Officer to perform the duties properly. Dr. Wells is a regular physician, has passed a successful examination for the appointment of Asst. Surgeon of Col'd Troops and is now awaiting assignment in this Reg't.' The verso bears the A.E.S., dated June 30, of Col. [later Brevet Brigadier General] FREDERICK LISTER, commander of the 40th U. S. Colored Infantry, forwarding the request with his strong recommendation. The request is next endorsed as forwarded by a second colonel to CHARLES CRUFT (1826-1873) Union brigadier general thrice wounded in action, who fought in most significant campaigns of the War, breveted major general by Lincoln. Cruft signs his endorsement in black ink, again forwarding the request as approved and adding his rank ‘Bvt. Maj. Gen. Comdg.' The request next bears the signed endorsement of Maj. Gen. ALVAN C. GILLAM (1830-1875), again forwarding it as approved, with a final endorsement by Department of Tennessee commanding major general GEORGE STONEMAN (1822-1894), who signs in black ink on a partly-printed forwarding slip affixed to the document. Shows expected folds with slight splits thereto, otherwise in very good condition.
