UNION GENERALS (7)
A fine group of seven Union general signatures, in various formats (noted). Includes: RUFUS SAXTON (1824-1908) brigadier general, Medal of Honor recipient, after the war served as the Freedmen's Bureau's first assistant commissioner. Signature adding rank on a small mounted sheet, heavily toned with foxing; JULIUS STAHEL (1825-1912) commanded cavalry in West Virginia, awarded the Medal of Honor for his gallantry at Piedmont. A.L.S. 1898, sending thanks to the President of a veteran organization. Heavily toned; ROBERT C. SCHENCK (1809-1890) fought Jackson in the Valley campaign, wounded at Second Bull Run. A.L.S. 1864 making an introduction. Loss at bottom corners resulting in damage to signature; PHILIP SHERIDAN (1831-1888) major general of cavalry and famous Indian fighter, served throughout the war, from Booneville to Chickamauga and the elimination of J.E.B. Stuart at Yellow Tavern. Signature with rank on a small slip, mounted and heavily toned, with fold through rank; HENRY G. THOMAS (1837-1897) colonel of the 19th United States Colored Infantry, saw action at First Bull Run and the Peninsula Campaign. War-date D.S. 1862, an abstract for commissary signed as captain 11th Infy; LORENZO THOMAS (1804-1875) general and chief of staff to Winfield Scott. War-date partial muster roll, badly damaged, with separate A.D.S. confirming the soldier's enrollment; STEWART VAN VLIET (1815-1901) officer who served in the Mexican American War under Zachary Taylor and Winfield Scott, later served as a Union general during the Civil War and Chief Quartermaster of the Army of the Potomac. A.L.S. 1881, social content. Very good. Seven pieces.

Signature is always required, unless other arrangements are made. Handling and shipping charges will be added to the invoice in one entry. Buyers should be aware that large, framed, fragile or odd shaped items can incur substantial shipping and packing charges. International shipments are invoiced by DIMENSIONAL weight, not the item weight.
