A fine group of four Union general signatures, in various formats (noted). Includes: STEWART VAN VLIET (1815-1901) officer who served in the Mexican American War under Zachary Taylor and Winfield Scott, later served as a Union general during the Civil War and Chief Quartermaster of the Army of the Potomac. War-date D.S. 1862, a receipt for the purchase of coal, badly split and repaired with cellophane tape; EGBERT L. VIELE (1825 - 1902) general who took Norfolk and later served as Military Governor of the city. A.L.S. 1898 accepting an invitation, very good; FITZ HENRY WARREN (1816 – 1878) major general, served as minister to Guatemala postwar. A.L.S. 1869 regarding financial matters. Very good; CADWALLADER C. WASHBURN (1818 - 1882) led three divisions in Grant's siege and ultimate taking of Vicksburg. Partly-printed D.S. 1880, a check signed. Very good; and JOSEPH RODMAN WEST (1812-1898) general crucial in the recapture of New Mexico, serving the balance of the war in the Gulf. A.L.S. 1889 to Henry Cist regarding a publication.
