Good lot of three items signed by Union generals of the Civil War, includes: JOHN NEWTON (1823-1895) Union major general who took over Reynold's command at Gettysburg, also fought at Antietam and Chancellorsville. A.L.S., 1p. 8vo. New York, March 10, 1890, to attorney Benjamin W Austin. Newton, informs his correspondent, the secretary of a historical society, that he does not posses any letters or document signed by Gen. Mansfield Lovell to donate to their collection. He signs at the conclusion in black ink. Mounted to a slightly larger sheet of paper, else very good. WITH: ROBERT S. FOSTER (1834-1903) Union brigadier general who played prominent roles in the siege of Petersburg and the Appomattox Campaign, remembered for his desperate attacks to Fort Gregg at great cost to his command. Signature in black ink on a 4" x 2 1/2" slip of paper, adding the salutation "Yours truly" and rank "Brig. Genl. Comdg 1st Div. 24th A.C. Richmond Va". Shows slight ink erosion to the salutation, repaired on the verso with cello tape, else very good. WITH: CUVIER GROVER (1828-1885) Union brigadier general in command at Fort Union when he was surrounded by a larger Confederate force. He burned his supplies and in a forced march brought his command safely across Missouri. Signature "C Grover" in black ink, cut from a letter and adding his rank "Bvt. Maj. Genl." Mounted to a card, shows slight toning at the right edge, else very good. Three pieces.
