UNION GENERALS (3)
Good group of three items signed by union generals, includes: HALBERT E. PAINE (1826-1905), Union brigadier general who lost a leg in the siege of Port Hudson and refused to obey Butler's order to burn Baton Rouge. Defended Washington D.C. against Jubal A. Early's raid in 1864. Signature in black ink on a 3.75 x 1.5 in. slip of paper cut from the conclusion of a letter, adding his rank ‘Brig Gen Vols'. Shows pencil notations to recto and verso, as well as archival tape mounting remnants else very good. WITH: ROBERT K. SCOTT (1826 –1900), American politician, the 74th Governor of South Carolina, and a Brigadier General in the Union Army during the Civil War. During the war, he served at Port Gibson, Raymond, Champion Hill, and Atlanta, where he was captured. Close-cut signature ‘R K Scott' in black ink on a 3.25 x 1 slip of paper, with his rank added in another hand. Shows slight brushing to the ink, with mounting remnants to the verso, else very good. WITH: JAMES R. SLACK (1818-1881), Union brigadier general of volunteers, fought at Island Number Ten, the Siege of Vicksburg, Fort Blakely and the Red River Campaign. Close-cut signature ‘Jas. R Slack' in black ink on a 3 x 0.75 in. slip of paper, adding his rank ‘Brig Genl' below. Toned overall, with mounting remnants to the verso, else very good. Three pieces.
