War-date A.L.S. 1p. small folio, New York, Feb 19, 1863, written by Lt. Col. Nelson B. Bartram and endorsed by two Union generals. Bartram writes, in part: ‘…I have the honor to request that the majority of this Regiment made vacant by the honorable discharge of Major Grover, be left open until further notice. The harmony and best interests of this Reg't will be thus promoted…' On the verso is the endorsement of Brigadier Gen. CHARLES GRIFFIN (1825-1867) who fought from Bulls Run to Appomattox, who writes ‘…Respectfully forwarded and strongly recommended as the regiment is quite small…' and Colonel HENRY A. WEEKS (1822-1891) Colonel and commander of the 12th New York Volunteer Infantry, which he commanded in the Peninsular Campaign. Just prior to the Battle of Second Bull Run, he assumed command of the Third Brigade, First Division, V Corps Army of the Potomac. He writes: ‘…Respectfully forwarded and strongly approved as the commanding officer in the field of a Regmt, is and should be the best judge of the effect of either promotions or removals in his command…'. Fine.
