UNION GEN NAPOLEON J. T. DANA'S SON SUBMITS HIS RESIGNATION - TO HIS FATHER!
War-date A.L.S., 1p. 4to., Memphis, Jan. 11, 1865, a letter of resignation from GEORGE S. DANA (1837-1919), captain of the 32nd Massachusetts Infantry, to his father NAPOLEON J. T. DANA (1822 –1905), a brigadier general in the Union Army who was most noted for his actions at Antietam. The younger Dana writes, in part: ‘…This morning is the second occasion on which you have deemed it necessary to question my integrity; doubted by you on account of the scandalizing reports of some Citizen or Citizens; and as you seem – at least – in a measure to have lost that confidence, which, heretofore, you have done me the honor to repose in me, I now beg to tender my resignation, and desire that it be immediately and unconditionally accepted…' His father endorses on the back ‘…for the consideration of the major general commanding with the earnest request that the resignation be accepted, Capt. Dana will present this paper in person at the above named headquarters…' Spot on the right margin with a short tear, else very good.
