Description:

Union soldier's letter on patriotic stationary, 4pp. 8vo., Camp Near Fredericksburgh, May 19, 1863, in which Christian Walthart, Co. C, NY 15th Engineers writes a friend. In part: ...the paper says our time will be out the 17th of June...but I don't know whether I shall get home or not, the word is now, that the government intends to keep us the term we swore in, regardless of the promise that we should go home with the Regiment...all the men are anxious to go home...I hear that 120 of the Duryeas, or 5th N.Y.V. have deserted...it is a bad idea, I tell you, to keep these men... Walthart also adds his opinion about the draft, writing in part: ...don't you believe there will be no draft, we cannot move until we get more men...I wish this cruel war was over, for my part, and that is the only way to finish it, get enough men for once, so that we will not be outnumbered... Unfortunately for Walthart, he would remain in the army for the remainder of the war, finally being mustered out July 2, 1865. Very good to fine.
