Description:

A large group of approx. 50 documents related to an Irish born cavalryman named Thomas F. McCormick (? - 1903), who served in the 1st U.S. Cavalry regiment during the Civil War and later in the Philippines during the Spanish American War. Documents are varying sizes and pages, 1863-1911, including several appointment and discharge papers, recommendation letters, pension documents addressed to him and his widow, citizenship papers, and his Spanish American War soldier's handbook. An A.L.S. written by McCormick likely just after the Civil War is addressed to then Secretary of War Ulysses S. Grant outlining his service history and attesting to wounds. It reads in part: '...I enlisted in the First U.S. cavalry January 20, 1856...I served in the expedition under Lieut. Beal which started from Los Angeles California...I participated in the following battles and skirmishes: Siege of Yorktown April 1862...participated in Genl. Stoneman's raid...at Beverly Ford...Battle of Gettysburg July 2, 3, and 4th...Battle of Manassas Gap July 21 and 22...participated in General Sheridan's raid...Battle of Cold Harbor June 1st 1864 in which I received three gunshot wounds, one in the left side, one in the left forearm which carried away five inches of bone and totally disabled me, and the 3rd on the left side of my head...' and more. McCormick would be discharged after the war, only to reenlist again in the mid-1890s. He would die in 1903 in Omaha Nebraska survived by his widow Elizabeth. Conditions vary but mostly good.
