UNION CAPTAIN'S REPORT DURING ATLANTA CAMPAIGN WITH HAND-DRAWN MAP
Fine content A.L.S. of Capt. and Assistant Adjutant General William T. Forbes, Co. G, 102nd New York Infantry, 3pp. 4to., ‘Headquarters 2nd Div. 20th A Corps', July 3, 1864. Directed to Lt. Col. C. W. Asmussen, Assistant Inspector General, 20th Corps, it reads in part: ‘…The main body of our troops were returned to the commander's line of breastworks previously occupied as our reserve line. These works were extended about 200 yards to the right, curving to the rear, until they reach the wood at the swampy thicket which extends in front of Genl. [Jacob D.] Cox's line, there effectually guarding that flank. Bundy's Battery remains in the works where they connect with those of the 3rd division. Of McGill's Battery, 3 pieces are posted in the works on a commanding ridge, near our right center – 3 others on a similar knob overlooking our right flank. 900 men are left in the furthest advanced breastwork. They are distributed along the works, and from them the outpost sentinels are furnished. That line of 900 men is under charge of the Division Officer of the day, and is about 1100 yds. long. Our main line of works is about 800 yds. long…'. Forbes adds in a postscript: ‘A change in the artillery positions has been made – the whole of McGill's Battery is in our right center – 3 guns of Bundy's near our right, and 3 on our left…'. He further adds a very detailed diagram of the positions on the final page. Fine condition, and worthy of further research!
