Good lot of ten items signed by Union brevet generals of the Civil War, includes: ANDREW J. ALEXANDER (1833-1887), signature in black ink on a 4 1/4" x 2 1/2" slip of paper cut from the conclusion of a letter, with his rank in another hand. Shows a horizontal fold, else very good. WITH: WILLIAM W. DUDLEY (1842-1909), partly-printed D.S., 1p. 4to., [Washington, D.C.], Jan. 4, 1882, a pension certificate to Capt. Cornelius McClellan, "...being for 'Malarial poisoning and resulting disease of liver, and piles'" Dudley signs at the conclusion in black ink as Commissioner of Pensions. Shows folds, else very good. WITH: IRA C. ABBOTT (1824-1908), A.L.S., 1p. 4to., Washington, D.C., Sep. 19, 1889, to Gen. Henry M. Cist, requesting a copy of a letter from another general, and adding: "...I have always regarded General [William] Rosecrans as one of our great Generals while some criticized him rather sharply. I believe that history will place him among the great Genls. of the Army." He signs at the conclusion in black ink. Shows some toning to the edges, else very good. WITH: FELIX ANGUS (1839-1925), partly-printed D.S., 1p. oblong 8vo., Baltimore, Sep. 29, 1883, a check paying $562.30 to a Russell Armstrong. Angus signs at bottom right in black ink. Punch cancelled twice, not affecting the signature, else very good. WITH: ALONZO ALDEN (1834-1900) A.N.S., 1p. oblong 8vo., Troy, July [n.d.], 1877, to an O. Bennett, requesting that his correspondent give a Mrs. Ryan 14 rolls of wallpaper. He signs at the conclusion in black ink. Shows folds with a split repaired on the verso with cello tape, else very good. WITH: RUSSELL A. ALGER (1836-1907) signature in black ink on a 3 1/2" x 2 1/4" card, adding his position "Secty. of War", in which capacity he served from 1897-1899. Very good. WITH: THOMAS S. ALLEN (1825-1905) partly-printed D.S., 1p. oblong 8vo., Madison, Aug. 30, 1866, a certificate from the Wisconsin State Secretary's office affirming that a D. Lloyd Jones is owed $75.00. Allen signs at bottom right as Wisconsin secretary of state. Shows a punch cancellation away from the signature, else very good. WITH: SAMUEL C. ARMSTRONG (1839-1893), A.N.S., 1p. 12mo., Fort Monroe, 1866, to a Capt. Weysted, requesting an audience that afternoon. He signs at the conclusion in black ink. Shows mounting remnants to the verso, else very good. WITH: ROBERT AVERY (1839-1912), T.L.S., 1p. 4to., New York, Aug. 6, 1891, to attorney Harman Bell, a rather irritable letter attempting to collect a debt. Avery signs in black ink at the conclusion, with several post-script accounting notes added in another hand below the message and on the verso. Very good. WITH: EDWIN B. BABBITT (1802-1881), A.L.S., 1p. 4to., Philadelphia, Nov. 21, 1856, to Capt. R.W. Potter of the Schuylkill Arsenal, requesting that his correspondent pack up and turn over a quantity of dragoon uniforms and equipment for delivery to a lieutenant of dragoons. He signs at the conclusion in black ink. A printed biographical sketch is affixed at the top left corner, else very good. Ten pieces.
