Description:

FRIEDRICH KARL FREIHERR VON EBERSTEIN (1894 - 1979) Early member of the Nazi party, the SA, the SS, Reichstag delegate, an HSSPF and SS-Oberabschnitt Führer, responsible for introducing Himmler and Heydrich, and as police president of Munich, he relayed Hitler's orders on Kristallnacht. Later denied all wrongdoing at Nuremberg. A very fine personal relic of von Eberstein, a field grey, open collar-style wool uniform tunic, fitted with collar tabs of black velvet trimmed with braided aluminum bullion. These tabs bear the pre-1942 rank insignia of an SS-Obergruppenfuhrer, and oak bough with three leaves over a single "pip", all embroidered in silver bullion. The border of the collar is also trimmed with braided aluminum bullion, and the shoulders each bear a sewn-in shoulder strap of knotted silver bullion, backed with black wool "Waffenfarbe" and secured with a pebbled metal button. A silver brocade Honor Chevron of the Old Guard is sewn to the right-hand sleeve, with an SS-style eagle patch embroidered in silver bullion on black wool affixed to the left-hand sleeve. The left-hand cuff displays a black-bordered silver brocade cuff band, as worn by SS chief Heinrich Himmler and his immediate subordinates. Each breast is fitted with a pleated patch pocket with a flap closed by a pebbled metal button. The left-hand pocket bears loops for an Iron Cross, with additional medal or ribbon bar loops above and below. A slanted flap-covered patch pocket is also fitted at each hip. The interior is lined with forest-green rayon, and the interior of the collar displays the label of Munich maker Christian Schwarz & Sohn, frayed to the point of illegibility. A horizontal slash pocket fitted within the left-hand side contains a Christian Schwarz-branded ownership label, bearing the typed date "Jan. 38" and the name "Po[lizei] Pr[aesident] SS-Oberg[ruppen]f[uhrer] Frhr. K[arl] v. Eberstein". Besides a few very light moth nips that do not penetrate the fabric and the aforementioned wear to the label, the tunic is in fine condition. Sold with an S.P., 11 x 15 in. b/w, depicting von Eberstein speaking at a podium, signed boldly on the mount below the print in black ink, adding the location "Halle" and the date "15.12.1935". The verso of the mount bears a typed label in which von Eberstein describes the black SS banner seen hanging behind him in the image, signed by him a second time in blue ink, adding the date "13.12.67". The grouping is rounded out by a black leather document portfolio attributed to von Eberstein, 13 x 16 in., bearing the printed "sig" runes of the SS in white, showing wear overall, else very good. Three pieces.
