(1822 - 1885) Eighteenth President of the United States and Union lieutenant general. Partly printed D.S. as President, 1p., oblong folio, Washington, March 5, 1874, a nomination of W.N. Berkley to the position of deputy postmaster for Alexandria, Va., with paper seal co-signed by , JOHN C. B. DAVIS as Acting Secretary of State. John Chandler Bancroft Davis served during both of Grant's terms as his Assistant Secretary of State; Davis also played a prominent role in the 1871 Treaty of Washington with the United Kingdom over covert assistance provided by the crown to the Confederacy (the Alabama claims). Age toned with slight foxing and a minor tear at the top of the central fold, none affecting signature, else fine.
