Description:

ULYSSES S. GRANT
(1822 - 1885) Eighteenth President of the United States and Union lieutenant general. Partly-printed D.S. as Secretary of War, 1p. 4to., Washington, Nov. 15, 1867, a brevet for James W. Scully for ‘…gallant and meritorious service in the battle of Mill Springs, Ky, a Major by Brevet…'. The Battle of Mill's Springs took place on Jan. 19, 1862, pitting Confederate forces under Felix Zollicoffer against Union forces led by George H. Thomas and resulted in a Union victory. Thomas held off the Confederates until reinforcements under Albin F. Schoepf arrived, breaking the Confederate line. Zollicoffer would be killed in action by Speed S. Fry after mistaking Union soldiers for his own forces. For the Union, the battle had a galvanizing effect after the recent defeats at First Bull Run and Ball's Bluff. More research needed about James W. Scully and his role in this pivotal battle. Fine.
