Description:

ULYSSES S. GRANT
(1822 - 1885) Eighteenth President of the United States and Union lieutenant general. Rare war-date signed endorsement on the verso of a petition addressed to Iowa Gov. SAMUEL J. KIRKWOOD, 2pp. 4to., 'Camp Montgomery Near Corinth Miss.', Aug. 8, 1862. Several officers of the 14th Iowa recommend Cpl. and Adjutant Thomas G. Ferreby be given a commission as a line or staff officer in the regiment. On the verso of the integral leaf, Grant signs a manuscript endorsement forwarding the request to Gov. Kirkwood from Corinth on Aug. 9th. The document also bears an A.E.S. of Brig. Gen. PLEASANT A. HACKLEMAN (1814-1862). Two months later at Corinth, Hackleman attempted to rally his brigade and was shot through the neck. His final words were: 'I am dying, but I die for my country'. Hackleman notes: '...I fully concur in the statements made within...' Also present is an A..E.S. of THOMAS A. DAVIS (1809-1899), a veteran of First Bull Run and Corinth, forwarding the document. and a manuscript forwarding endorsement signed by Union Major Gen. GEORGE CADWALADER (1806-1879). Two days after the writing of this letter, Ferreby would be commissioned into the Field & Staff of the 26th Iowa 26th Infantry. Very good.
