Description:

ULYSSES S. GRANT (1822-1885) Eighteenth President of the United States and Union lieutenant general. An excellent, very personal relic from the great general, gifted from his son to an admirer as Grant was near death, Grant's own fine, white silk necktie with letter of provenance, attractively matted and framed. The necktie measures approx. 31.5 x 2 in. with finely-finished ends. It is presented folded lengthwise upon itself, as it would be worn, and lightly tacked to a mat. It is accompanied by a 2pp. 24mo. note presenting the piece, written by FREDERICK DENT GRANT (1850-1912), the president's first son. The younger Grant served under W. T. Sherman, Sheridan, Custer, and led with distinction in the Spanish and Philippine-American Wars. Fredericks's letter, undated but likely sent from Mt. McGregor shortly before his father's death in 1885, reads in full: 'Genl Grant being no longer able to write his auto[graph] for his friends I take the liberty of sending you one of his neckties. Hoping this will gratify you I remain &c F. D. Grant'. The necktie and card (one side color copied for framing) are very nicely double-matted with an engraving of Grant, and set into a 22.5 in. x 16.5 in black and gold frame. Photo shown here of U.S. Grant on the porch of the Mt. McGregor cottage is being shown for reference only and not part of this lot. A fine memento from a great hero.
