Description:

(ULRIC DAHLGREN)
ULRIC DAHLGREN (1842-1864) Union cavalry officer and the son of Union Adm. John A. Dahlgren. Dahlgren had his leg amputated below the knee after being wounded at the Battle of Gettysburg. He returned to military service and was killed in 1864 during the Battle of Walkerton while leading a raid on the Confederate capital of Richmond, allegedly to burn the city and to assassinate Jefferson Davis. A.D.S. in the hand of a telegraphist on U.S. Military Telegraph form, 1p. 8vo., Fairfax Court House, [n.p., n.d. though possibly June, 1863], to the chief of staff of his commander, Gen. Franz Sigel at Fairfax Court House. In part: 'In case you should change your position before I return will you please send the small ambulance to Washington so that I can reach you without delay. Gen. Burnside says he will send one tomorrow'. Small hole near top, else fine. Interestingly, in a telegram Dahlgren sent to his father from Fairfax Court House that orriginally accompanied this one, Ulric asked his father his opinion of his desired resignation from the army to rejoin the Navy. It is entirely possibly that the younger Dahlgren went to Washington to further discuss the matter with family and military....
