Description:

U.S.S. WINONA PAYROLL AFTER CAPTURING BLOCKADE RUNNER
Interesting manuscript D.S., 4pp. legal folio, [off Charleston, July, 1864], a list of the approx. 100 officers and crewmen of the USS Winona listing them by name, rank and pay "...at the date of the capture of the Schooner off Charleston...". On the verso, a notation is made that the schooner Pocahontas had been taken as a prize on July 8, 1864. Very good. The list of crewmen's pay was prepared in order to determine the share each would receive from the sale of the vessel and contraband goods thereon. The had a distinguished war record, and at the time was part of the South Atlantic Blockading Squadron, operating along the coast from South Carolina to Florida. The Pocahontas was captured as she was attempting to pass out of Charleston harbor bound to Nassau, laden with 53 bales of cotton and 299 boxes of tobacco.
