Description:

U.S.S. TEXAS PHOTOGRAPH ALBUM
Pre-war photograph album compiled by Apprentice Seaman Orval Bartlow of the battleship U.S.S. TEXAS, ca. 1928-30 including cruises around North and South America, Cuba, Puerto Rico, etc. There are 155+ photo in all, about 100 being images with captions in the plate showing the TEXAS in drydock, during practice firing, at the Panama Canal and various other ports of call, some views at sea and a visit by President Herbert Hoover, parade scenes, sights ashore, the crew in dress uniform, etc., all about 4 x 6 in. Smaller photos show Bartlow and friends aboard ship in various poses, ashore, family members, etc. All are contained within a 'U.S.S. TEXAS' faux black leather album. Accompanied by Bartlow's Dishonorable Discharge following his release from the U.S. Naval Prison, Mare Island, July 31, 1932. TEXAS became the flagship of the United States Fleet, one of only four ships to be designated U.S. Fleet flagships from 1922 to 1941. In World War II, she escorted war convoys across the Atlantic and later shelled Vichy French forces in the North African landings and German-held beaches in Normandy before being transferred to the Pacific Theater late in 1944 to provide naval gunfire support during the Battles of Iwo Jima and Okinawa. She was the only Allied battleship that took part in all four of these amphibious landings.
