Description:

U.S.S. INDIANAPOLIS SURVIVORS SIGNED BOOK
Signed book "Fatal Voyage The Sinking of the USS Indianapolis" by Dan Kurzman" (New York: (Atheneum), 1990. First edition, 332pp. 8vo., illustrated. Signed by the author on the title page, also signed by 43 survivors of that nautical disaster who have applied their bold signature to the first three leaves of the book. Fine, with dust jacket. On 30 July 1945, after delivering parts for the first atomic bomb to Tinian, the ship was torpedoed by Japanese submarine I-58, sinking in 12 minutes. Of 1,196 crewmen aboard, approximately 300 went down with the ship. The remaining 900 faced exposure, dehydration, saltwater poisoning, and shark attacks while floating with few lifeboats and almost no food or water. The Navy learned of the sinking when survivors were spotted four days later by the crew of a PV-1 Ventura on routine patrol. Only 317 survived. The sinking will be the subject of a major film: USS INDIANAPOLIS: MEN OF COURAGE, to be released on Veterans Day.
