Description:

U.S.S. GILMORE "HOMEWARD BOUND" FLAG RELIC AND SAILOR'S GROUPING
A fine grouping of material from Navy Sound Operator 2nd Class John K. Pinter who served aboard the USS GILMORE (DD-18) from Sep. 6, 1943 until the end of the war. Included in the grouping is a 12 1/2" x 4 1/2" section of one of the vessel's flags or pennants, a red and white striped section marked: "HOMEWARD BOUND PENANT FROM ALEUTIANS JAN - 13 - 45". Also: seven photos of Pinter, and vessel crew and operations, various sizes; Pinter's shoulder patch, "Ruptured Duck" patch, Navy cap tally, dog tag, ribbon bar, 180th Meridian crossing document, souvenir dog tag pennies and Japanese coin, and training certificate and separation document. As a sound man, Pinter was awarded a Bronze Star, probably for involvement in the sinking of the Japanese submarine I-180. On Apr. 25, 1944 the submarine was detected while surfaced southwest of Chirikof Island. The submarine promptly crash dived, and over the next three hours GILMORE laid down three barrages of "Hedgehog" anti-submarine mortar shells and depth charges, before finally seeing a heavy underwater explosion at 0112 on April 26. Provenance: The War Museum, New York.
