Description:

U.S.A.A.F. 550TH BOMB SQUADRON A-2 JACKET
United States Army Air Force brown leather Type A-2 flight jacket with a woven waist, a size 44. Affixed to the left chest is a hand-painted leather patch depicting a hedgehog walking on a cloud and carrying a bomb. It is uncommon to see this particular patch as the squadron more frequently displayed the insignia of a beast with a bomb in its teeth. An 8th Air Force hand-painted leather patch is set at the left shoulder, depicting wings coming from the number eight. The sewn-in label on the collar reads: ‘TYPE A-2 DWG. NO. 39445 A.C. CONTRACT NO. 42-87756'. The jacket bears two flap pockets at the front, closed by snap buttons. Some light cracking to the painted sections, else in excellent condition. The 550th bomb squadron left for England in 1943 after completing their training and participated in the strategic bombing campaign against Germany. They also took part in the attacks on the Messerschmitt aircraft factory and on transportation chokepoints on D-Day.
