Description:

Original uniform worn by a corporal of the U.S. Army's Quartermaster Corps during World War I, consisting of a Pattern 1911 summer service jacket, constructed of khaki cotton fabric and fitted with flap-covered patch pockets at each breast and hip. The jacket is closed at front by five bronzed buttons displaying the Great Seal of the United States, secured on the back with split rings. The collar bears buttons depicting the initials "US" on the right-hand lapel, and the insignia of the Quartermaster Corps on the left. The left-hand sleeve bears a wool double-chevron insignia patch, indicating the rank of corporal, while the right-hand sleeve bears an scarce embroidered diamond-shaped wool patch displaying the initials "GISD", indicating that the wearer was deployed to a General Intermediate Storage Depot, most likely that at Gievres, which comprised the largest supply depot of the American Expeditionary Forces during the conflict. This sleeve also bears a red wool Honorable Discharge chevron, with a double service chevron in brocade on wool, indicating two tours of duty. The coat bears no manufacturing information, and shows a few moderately-sized holes at the shoulders, else very good. The coat is accompanied by a pair of summer service trousers, again constructed of khaki cotton fabric with thigh pads and laces at the ankles, again unmarked. The group is rounded out by a Pattern 1911 service hat, constructed of brown felt with a khaki band, stamped "USA-R & PT" in black ink and bearing a paper label giving the size "7 3/8". A civilian-style pith helmet is also present, exact significance unknown.
