Description:

U.S. NAVY ILLUMINATED GUN SIGHT
U.S. Navy Mark IX illuminated gun sight, approx. 6" x 3 1/4" x 3 1/4", as used with turret-mounted or flexible machine guns on many U.S. Navy aircraft of World War II. Adapted from the British Turret and Free Gun Sight Mk. III, the sight consists of an illuminated reticule projected onto a hooded piece of angled glass. The hood is fitted with a hinged polarizing filter for use in high-glare conditions. A dimmer switch is fitted to the left-hand side of the Bakelite case, and a rubber-sheathed power cable protrudes from the base. The right-hand side bears a maker''s plaque giving the model number, the serial number "46842", and identifying the manufacturer as the Wollensak Optical Company of Rochester. Shows slight wear, else very good. Also present is an original Wollensak-branded cardboard carton for this model sight, bearing a U.S. Navy anchor approval stamp, albeit showing a different serial number than the example presented here, as well as a pilot''s sight angle meter, as used with sights such as this which were not gyroscopically compensated. Three pieces.
