Description:

Good lot of three items signed by notable U.S. Navy personalities. Includes: GIDEON WELLES (1802-1878) Secretary of the Navy during the Civil War, successfully implemented the blockade of Southern ports under the "Anaconda Plan", despite his own misgivings. War-date partly-printed D.S., 1p. 4to., [Washington, D.C.], Nov. 2, 1861, ordering Lt. John G. Walker to report to Commodore Hiram Paulding for duty aboard the gunboat WINONA. Welles signs at center left in black ink, with several other individuals countersigning. The signature shows some brushing, with original folds and slight toning, else very good. WITH: JAMES ARMSTRONG (1794-1868) Career U.S. Navy officer who served during the War of 1812, the Second Opium War, and surrendered the Pensacola Navy Yard to the Confederates at the outset of the Civil War. A.L.S. "Jas. Armstrong", 2pp. 4to., aboard the frigate USS MACEDONIAN at Norfolk, Sep. 11, 1837, to John Crowninshield, conveying his sympathies for his correspondent's son, who has contracted a serious but unstated illness. He signs boldly at the conclusion in black ink. Shows original mailing folds, with a slight split thereto repaired with cello tape, and a small area of paper loss where the original seal was opened, else very good. WITH: WILLIAM B. SHUBRICK (1790-1874) Rear Admiral whose long career included service aboard the WASP, HORNET, CONSTELLATION and CONSTITUTION during the War of 1812, and led the blockade of Mazatlan during the Mexican-American War. A.N.S., 1p. 4to. Baltimore, Jan. 2, 1838. Shubrick adds a nearly illegible post-script to a recommendation for a 'Dr. Grace", drafted by a "Brice". Shubrick signs at the conclusion in black ink, adding his rank "Captain". Shows chips and slight foxing to the edges, else very good. Three pieces.
