Description:

U.S. NAVY ENGINEER''S MATE''S HAND-CARVED SEA CHEST
World War II-era wood sea chest, 31 1/2" x 14 1/2" x 14", presumably of oak construction, elaborately hand-carved by its builder. The lid bears a finely-executed eagle over a shield with two crossed anchors, all within a ring with a seaweed motif reaching outward from the bottom. Above this design appears the title "U.S. Navy", while the name of the carver, "En[gineer''s] M[ate] Gauzza", appears at bottom. The dates "1917" and "1944" appear at the bottom corners of the lid, presumably attesting to Gauzza''s long Navy career. The front of the chest bears a finely-carved seashell motif, again within a ring with seaweed reaching out from the bottom. The sides of the chest and edges of the lid further bear fine scrollwork. Two wood handles are affixed to the sides of the chest with steel nails, and the chest rests on four finely-carved lion''s feet. The feet of the chest are detachable, else very good. A most attractive piece of seaman''s art!
