Description:

Fine and quite rare example of the M-209, a portable, mechanical cipher machine used by the U.S. military in World War II. This example, a U.S. Navy model identical to that used by the Army, is 7 in. wide x 3 in. tall (cased), and it represents a brilliant achievement for pre-electronic technology. It used a wheel scheme like that of a telecipher machine, such as the Lorenz cypher or Germany's famous 'Enigma' machine. However, if a codebreaker got hold of two overlapping sequences, he could eventually break the code. By early 1943, German cryptanalysts were already able to read M-209 messages. This example, production date unknown, appears to be in perfect working order and still has a reel of tape fixed to the top cover. Setting screws are all present and apparently operable, paint in excellent condition. The source control stamp is found on the bottom at the top right corner: 'SC2233A'.
