Description:

U.S. NAVY 40MM ANTI-AIRCRAFT GUN SIGHT
World War II-era Mark 14, Mod. 15 gun sight, approx. 12" x 14 1/4" x 10 3/4", as used on the single mount 40mm Bofors anti-aircraft gun commonly found on most U.S. Navy ships. The sight, painted grey overall, was intended to be mounted at the gun pointer''s position on the left-hand side of the weapon, and was pneumatically driven and gyroscopically stabilized. When powered, an illuminated reticule would be projected inside the sight window. The gyro would overcome the motion of the ship, allowing the gunner to shoot accurately despite external conditions. A range knob graduated to 3200 yards is present on the bottom right-hand side, with a lever controlling an internal light filter on the left, and additional control knobs on the upper right side and the rear. Two shock absorbers are fitted to the bottom for added stability. A maker''s plaque affixed to the front bears the model number of the instrument, and identifies the manufacturer as the Sperry Gyroscope Co. of Brooklyn, and giving the serial number "55814". An embossed warning on the rear of the instrument instructs the gunner to keep the weapon horizontal when not in use, while a second label dictates that a special air supply unit must be used. The sight is housed in its original 14" x 15" x 16" sheet steel case, painted grey, well marked with Bureau of Ordnance labels and with the model number and gun type prominently displayed. Very good to fine overall. Also present is an operator''s manual for the earlier Mod. 6. 7. and 8 versions of this sight, 50pp. 4to., published by the Bureau of Ordnance in December of 1943, as well as a Mark 10 Angle Solver and three copies of a well-illustrated U.S. Navy publication, "Gunner''s Operating Bulletin No. 2", each 42pp. 8vo., giving a basic overview of the sight and its correct use.
