Description:

(U.S. MERCHANT MARINE) S.S. MORMACPENN PLAQUE AND CHRISTENING BOTTLE
A nice relic from the heyday of the U.S.-flagged merchant marine, the ribbon-wrapped (broken) bottle of champagne and carved presentation oak plaque presented upon the launching of the S.S. MORMACPEN at the Ingalls Shipbuilding Corporation yard at Pascagoula, Miss. The 492 foot C-3-S-A5 freighter had three sisterships which all did military service. This vessel, the last of her class, was launched on June 28, 1946 and delivered to the U.S. Maritime Commission. An large number of stars and an eagle with outstretched wings appear at top, the eagle lacking one wing. Cloth bag holding the shattered bottle fragments is very weak and contents may not remain completely encased - we recommend they be removed prior to shipping and then replaced. The Maritime Commission took delivery of many ordered and now superfluous transport vessels at war''s end, and arranged their sale to nations whose fleets had been decimated by Axis submarine and aerial attacks. The MORMACPENN was one such ship, and she would continue to trade until 1972.
