U.S. FIRST ARMY PSYCHOLOGICAL WARFARE BRANCH ANNOUNCES V-E DAY
Scarce mimeographed newsletter, 2pp. 4to., May 8, 1945, a "Monitoring Report" released by the Psychological Warfare and Propaganda Section of the headquarters of the 1st U.S. Army, announcing the unconditional surrender of Germany and the declaration of V-E Day. In part: "...General Eisenhower received Col. General Jodl and General -Admiral Friedeburg later and repeatedly asked whether the German emissaries understood the full implications of the surrender. The answer was ''yes''. General Jodl then asked for permission to speak and was granted it. He said: ''With this signature, the German people and armed forces are delivered for better or worse into the hands of the victors''..." The announcement goes on to quote the broadcast made by German Foreign Minister von Krosigk, relaying Karl Doenitz'' surrender order to all Germans: "''German men and women, the German High Command announces today, by order of Grand Admiral Doenitz, the unconditional surrender of all fighting German troops. As the leading Minister of the Reich''s new government, whom the Grand Admiral has appointed, I address the German people in this tragic moment of our history. The strength of Germany has succumbed to the overwhelming might of our enemies. The continuation of the war would mean only senseless bloodshed and useless devastation... The government, with a sense of responsibility for the welfare of the German people, has to draw the conclusion from the collapse of all physical and material resources to ask the enemy to cease hostilities...'' The report, obviously the last to be printed during wartime, concludes by thanking their correspondents and readers for their support during its print run. Shows a horizontal fold at center, else very good. Also present is theTuesday, May 8, 1945 edition of "The Stars and Stripes",also announcing the German surrender, as well as the Friday, April 13, 1945 edition of the same newspaper, announcing the death of President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Both very good. Three pieces.
