Description:

U.S. ARMY/MARINES JUNGLE CAMO SUIT
Scarce 1942 U.S. Army/Marines-issue jungle camouflage zip-up overalls which were used in the South Pacific for a short period of time. Initially used by the Army until camo in the Army was discontinued, they were thereafter distributed to the Marines, where one-piece suits for use in the sweaty jungle was not welcomed. Henceforth large quantities were stored as surplus in New Guinea, and later repatriated. These were designed and constructed to be used as reversible, showing a bright green and brown pattern outside, and a more subdued brown/tan toned pattern printed on the interior. A multi-color printed garment of cotton construction, with braces/suspenders still intact within, crotch/zipper reinforced, fitted with a collar and four pockets. This example is still fitted with the 13-star black buttons as issued to the Army, although examples appear with two different Army pattern buttons, no Marine buttons were ever applied to these pieces. These coveralls were issued to the 1st Marine Division and the 1st and 4th Raider Battalions for the New Georgia Operation. A 'Phila. Q. M.' depot marked tag remains inside lower right hand pocket and dates the piece to 1942 and the Detroit Overall Manufacturing Co., size 38R, although heavily faded the details can still be read. One small hole in the back of the right pant leg at knee level, else very good.
